Neutralizing our carbon emissions
We just finished working with LiveNeutral to inventory and offset our greenhouse gas emissions for 2006.
They first helped us perform an inventory of business activities that contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. Here’s what our emissions were for 2006 (in metric tons):
- Employee Bus Commutes: 3.2
- Employee Flight Travel: 2.4
- Company Vehicle Use: 2.5
- Electricity: 2.2
- Natural Gas: 0.9
In total, we emitted about 11.2 metric tons of CO2. To offset these emissions, LiveNeutral helped us purchase and retire 12 tons of CO2 offset credits through their affiliation with Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX). The credits only cost about $90, which made it a financial no-brainer, and we expect to repeat this process in a few months for 2008.
