Seattle Climate Action Now kicks off

The Seattle Climate Action Now campaign kicked off this morning at the recently renovated Seattle Aquarium. X-BAR is an official campaign business partner. (In fact, our logo was proudly showcased on the new Seattle CAN website that had been displayed on the plasma screen just behind the podium!)

Mayor Nickels along with Richard Conlin and a few local community leaders talked about the need for everybody to come together and take action to combat climate change. The event sponsors also arragned for a diver to be in the new Window on Washington tank with the Seattle Climate Action Now sign while the event was held and cameras were rolling.

Keep an eye out for events happening throughout the city in the coming days. Volunteers will be handing out light bulbs and signing up Seattle residents to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. I’ll be at Woodland Park Zoo tomorrow from 9:30 until 12:30 to hand out literature and help spread the word about the campaign.

Also, take a look at the handy getting started guide they’ve put together that includes these steps that everybody can take to “reduce energy bills and help save the planet”:

  • Turn your thermostat down to 55˚ at night and when you’re not home.
  • Weather seal your home’s windows, doors, ducts, and plumbing.
  • Turn your water heater down to 120˚.
  • Turn off and unplug electronic equipment and lights when not in use.
  • Change at least five light bulbs to compact fluorescent bulbs.
  • Check tire pressure every month.
  • Turn off your engine when stopped for more than 30 seconds.
  • Commute by bus, bike, carpool, or walking.
  • Think about your trip. Use the most efficient vehicle possible for the job.
  • Go car-free one day a week…or more.
  • Improve insulation in your home’s attic, crawlspace and walls.
  • Replace your car with a hybrid or other fuel efficient vehicle.
  • Buy locally produced food.
  • Plant an evergreen tree in your yard.
  • Spread the word, tell a friend.
