SharePoint mapped drives are slow to navigate

We use Windows SharePoint Services (WSS) 3.0 and have several network drives that we map to various document libraries. While we can use the browser to navigate and retrieve documents, I find that using Explorer with mapped network drive letters is faster. It has also worked well for providing a seamless transition from our old network shares.

This week traversing folders and retrieving files using these mapped network drives came to a grinding halt. It would take 5-8 seconds each time I clicked to open the next folder. Opening a file took even longer.

I had our internal technical team install WSS 3.0 SP2 as well as Office 2007 SP2 hoping that this would fix the problem. Neither of these provided any relief.

I did recall having a similar issue when I upgraded to Vista (still with Office 2007; I’m now running Windows 7), and remembered that disabling Automatically detect settings within Internet Explorer (Tools > Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings) did the trick. It worked this time too.

  1. Worked like a charm here as well. I believe that Automatically Detect Settings was re-enabled somehow, as it wasn’t previously on. Thanks for helping get rid of an extremely annoying problem….and my Sharepoint Team thanks you as well. They were getting tired of me complaining!

  2. thank you thank you thank you.
